PHILADELPHIA – Fran Dunphy, who spent 17 years as head coach of the University of Pennsylvania's men's basketball program and remains its winningest coach, was recently named as one of 15 sports greats to be inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame's 16th Induction Ceremony and Reception will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7 at the SugarHouse Event Center in Philadelphia.
Already a member of the Penn Athletics Hall of Fame (Class X), Dunphy is part of a Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame class that includes Al Cantello (Track & Field), Bill Melchionni (Basketball), Charlene Morett (Field Hockey), Clara Schroth-Lomady (Gymnastics), Donovan McNabb (Football), Eric Desjardins (Hockey), Frank 'Home Run' Baker (Baseball), Jayson Stark (Baseball, Legacy of Excellence), Matt Saad Mohmamed (Boxing), Mike Scioscia (Baseball), Paul Owens (Baseball, Legacy of Excellence), Rasheed Wallace (Basketball), Suzy Kolber (Football, Legacy of Excellence), and Troy Vincent (Football).
The winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history with 580 victories, Dunphy was Penn's head coach from 1989-90 to 2005-06. During that time he won 310 games, most by a coach in program history, and his teams won 10 Ivy League titles including five undefeated campaigns which is more than any other coach in Ivy history. Dunphy's teams from 1991-92 to 1995-96 won 48 straight Ivy League games, still the longest streak in conference history and the second-longest conference winning streak in NCAA history. Penn also won three Big 5 titles under Dunphy, who coached seven Ivy League Players of the Year, three Ivy League Rookies of the Year, and had 41 All-Ivy honorees.
Dunphy left Penn to become the head coach at Temple following the 2005-06 season and retired from the Owls at the end of this past season. He led Temple to 10 postseason appearances, including eight trips to the NCAA Tournament. In his 13 seasons at the Owls' helm, Dunphy compiled a 270-162 overall record and led the Cherry and White to three American Athletic Conference championships.
Dunphy was named the 2018-19 Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year after guiding Temple to a 23-10 record and an NCAA Tournament berth, and he also was inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame on April 15. Dunphy also received the Gene Bartow Award for his contributions to the game, the Dean Smith Award presented by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, and the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Good Guy Award during the course of the 2018-19 campaign.
